Here, we describe the implementation and assessment of an inquiry-based laboratory exercise in which students obtain and analyze novel data that contribute to our understanding of macromolecular trafficking between the nucleus and cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells. Because one goal of this exercise is to have students perform novel research experiments, the lab exercise was slightly altered nearly every semester so that students were testing nup1 for interaction with different soluble transport factors or were testing different domains of nup1 for binding to rna transporters.
